A couple years ago my father purchased 80 acres of land out in far western Maryland, near the town of Oakland. He's working with the state Department of Natural Resources to remove invasive species (Japanese barberry and multiflora rose vines) and plant trees to reduce erosion of the streambed. In the photo above you can see a small sliver of the 550 trees put in this spring. There's also a some-weather barn-style cabin near the top of a hill that was the previous owner's passion project until health and moving out of state with his new wife slowed down his progress.
We picked up lunch from Heidi's Bakery to eat in the cabin and then trooped into the woods to shoot at empty tin cans from 25-50 yards with my father's Ruger 10/22 rifle, which has a magnifying scope, and my Remington 572 rifle, which has a traditional scope. Neither has any kickback, so with ear protection they are fun and easy to shoot. Dear Husband and my SIL each hit their target on their very first shots, and many more after that.
